Pregnancy and newborn loss support

This module is designed for education, follow-up planning, and support after miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death.

It should support, not replace, diagnosis review with a qualified clinician. Some losses remain unexplained even after testing.

Chromosomal abnormality

common first trimester genetic

Many early miscarriages are related to chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo or fetus. This usually reflects a sporadic event rather than something the parent caused.

Common explanation

  • Embryonic or fetal chromosomal abnormality is a common cause of early pregnancy loss.
  • Risk increases with advancing maternal age.
  • A single early loss usually does not mean there will be repeated losses.

Evaluation clinicians may discuss

  • Review ultrasound findings and pregnancy timeline.
  • Confirm that ectopic pregnancy and molar pregnancy were excluded when relevant.
  • Genetic testing is usually not routine after a single early loss.

Treatment or follow-up

  • Discuss expectant, medical, or surgical management depending on symptoms and patient preference.
  • Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, fainting, or signs of infection.
  • Follow up to confirm complete passage if managed expectantly or medically.

Questions for the care team

  • Was the diagnosis confirmed by ultrasound or serial hCG testing?
  • Was any tissue sent for pathology or genetic testing?
  • When is follow-up recommended before trying to conceive again?
